It is the ultimate in golf, a feeling like no other. Teeing off in front of the imposing Royal & Ancient clubhouse, across Granny Clark's Wynd, with centuries of golfing history surrounding you, is a special moment, rightly cherished.
It is little surprise then, that demand for tee times on the Old Course is extremely high. There are four options for golfers hoping to secure one of these coveted slots:
Advanced Direct Booking
The first Wednesday in September each year, St Andrews Links Trust begins the application process for guaranteed tee times for the following year. At this point, private groups of between 2 and 8 golfers can submit a request for the two course package, which includes one round on the Old Course and one on the New, Jubilee or Castle Course. We will be more than happy to complete and submit an application on your behalf. You should receive notification within six weeks. Should you be successful, we will build the remaining components of your package around the guaranteed Old Course times. There is a separate form available to Single Golfers applying for times between April and July.
Your Golf Tours Exclusive Packages
Each year, we receive a small consignment of guaranteed tee times, which we package with golf in and around St Andrews, or with some of Scotland's other golfing highlights like Turnberry, Carnoustie or Gleneagles. These represent fantastic value for money and are our most sought after packages.
The Daily Old Course Ballot
Should you not be successful in obtaining an advanced guaranteed time, another option is the daily ballot. Applications must be received by 14.00, with results released at 16.00 for play the following 48 hours. As its name suggest, there is no guarantee of success in the ballot, but chances are highest for pairs and smaller groups. You can also help your chances by avoiding peak months (August and September), when supply of ballot times is at its leanest. We will be happy to submit ballot applications on your behalf, and will book the other rounds of your trip on courses that are flexible with alterations in the event of a successful ballot application. These include Kingsbarns, the Duke's Course and those at Fairmont St Andrews Resort.
Guaranteed Old Course Packages
The final option is to buy a golf and accommodation package that includes a guaranteed Old Course time. These are readily available, given a substantial enough lead time, but carry a cost premium that makes this the most expensive way to play the Old Course.
Handicap restrictions for playing the Old Course are 24 for men and 36 for ladies; you should travel with an up-to-date proof of handicap to present to the starter.
Carnoustie does not introduce itself gently. Within minutes of setting foot on the first tee, you make your acquaintance with the Barry Burn. Ten feet wide and with sheer banks, this water threads its sinuous menace through half a dozen holes, culminating in one of the cruellest finishes in golf.
The experience of playing the Castle Course will be a treat for the senses. The North Sea is a visible presence on every hole while the view towards St Andrews is one of the finest possible.
This traditional links course is a true test of skill and ability. Many consider the Jubilee to be the toughest test of golf at St Andrews, but well worth the effort.
Opened in April 1895, the course was built in response to increasing demand for golf at St Andrews, both from locals and from the visitors who were flocking to the town in increasing numbers on the recently constructed railway.
The oldest golf course in the world has many remarkable features which help make it so special to golfers around the world. It is the Home of Golf where golf was first played 600 years ago and yet it remains a real test of golf for today's champions.
Sitting on the summit of a spectacular formation, the hotel and its two stunning golf courses have breathtaking panoramic views of the Eden estuary and the medieval skyline of St Andrews.
Voted "Scottish Hotel of the Year" in 2007, the Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa provides a spectacular location with unrivalled amenities in the beautiful town of St Andrews.
